Katelyn Garcia

Hi! I’m a junior at Penn State University, University Park. I’m attending the Bellisario College of Communications to pursue a B.A. in digital and print journalism. I have minors in digital media trends and analytics (DMTA) and Italian. On campus, I write for The Daily Collegian, I’m a communications intern for Smeal College of Business and I’m heavily involved in Phi Beta Lambda, a professional business fraternity.

Growing up, I had an obsession with reading and art. I’ve fostered these interests through my pursuits in journalism, photography and communications. From creating a New Year’s giveaway for a local grocery store chain to organizing clips for Smeal’s Instagram Reels, I thrive when I’m able to express my creativity. I have strong writing skills, AP Style knowledge, natural curiosity and a passion for content creation.

  • Smeal College of Business - Marketing and Strategic Communications Intern (current)

    Within Smeal’s marketing department, I write updates for Penn State News, such as Smeal student marshal features. I take photos for articles, Instagram and Smeal Magazine. I monitor Smeal’s socials and pitch ideas for content needs. I’ve created two Instagram reel interviews with alumni and students that have reached 10-18K views.

    Munn Avenue Press - Intern (May 2022-March 2023)

    For Munn, I created Instagram posts and promotional material, such as bookmarks and author cards, for various clients. I was involved in the Amazon book publishing process and wrote Amazon descriptions for 8 different novels. I proof listened to a children’s audiobook, “The Lost Ship,” and noted issues with audio or transcriptions. I used various other publishing platforms, such as bookmarketingtools, and aided in marketing campaigns for clients.

    Sway (formally Returnmates) - Social Media Intern (Sept. 2020-Jan.2021)

    I had the opportunity to remotely be involved in the beginnings of Sway, an LA-based start-up focused on shipping and returns. I was involved in influencer outreach to network for UGC. I wrote an introductory blog post to aid in web design. I sat in on meetings about marketing strategy and learned about start-up work.

    Redner’s Markets - Corporate Dietitian Marketing Intern (Sept. 2019-May 2020)

    I worked with Redner’s Corporate Dietitian to encourage healthy eating through marketing. For weekly brand promotions, I researched and created healthy recipes for in-store taste testing stations. I coordinated with 44 grocery store locations with instructions and promotional material I created for each recipe. I created a New Year’s giveaway promotion and designed posters, newspaper ads and social media posts for the giveaway. I worked with brands such as Dole, Hint Water, Sabra and other canned food brands.

  • The Daily Collegian - Investigations Reporter

    The Daily Collegian is Penn State’s student-run newspaper. I previously wrote as a borough reporter, crime and courts reporter, abroad columnist and features reporter.

    Phi Beta Lambda Professional Coed Business Fraternity - External Vice President

    PBL is a collegiate division of FBLA that focuses on professional development and career preparation through professional events, philanthropy, competition and THON. I previously served as merchandise chair and director of communications.

  • I love photography, art history, reading, traveling and writing articles. To share these interests, I have fun curating photos for my personal Instagram stories, Pinterest and TikTok montages. I also enjoy being outside, so I run, hike, play pickleball with friends and love walking my dogs.
